Musami Mission
75 km east of the Capital Harare, the Musami Mission has been operating for over 80 years and now serves 9 regional wards with a population of 50,000 people covering over 1,000 sq km of communal land. Thanks to some excellent work from Jesuit Missions in Germany , they have been able to rebuild 3 previously dilapidated wards: the male, female and paed iatric wards. This has greatly improved the level of care that is offered by the hospital and has undoubted ly saved many lives enabling the hospital now to offer 150 bed s for the care of their community.
Unfortunately, over the past few years, as the country's governance has spiralled out of control, the situation at the hospital has become increasingly difficult. Aside from the effect of the debilitating 500% inflation level, the hospital is now suffering from other symptoms that are sadly becoming increasingly common in this once proud and healthy country.
A doubled workload: which can often mean that patients have to sleep on the floor as the bed s are filled with victims of the country's breakdown.
- Erratic electricity supply: often cutting short vital operations.
- A decrepit ambulance: which, when there is enough fuel to run it, is barely in better shape than those it is sent to pick up.
- A serious lack of drugs in every department.
- Insufficient staff accommodation: meaning that the already insufficient number of nurses and doctors are tempted away to other hospitals.
- The wards are new but the bed s are old and desperately need replacing.
Despite the fantastic help already given, it is essential that the Musami Hospital receives the help it so urgently requires. In our world it is difficult to imagine a situation where everything is falling apart: the roads, the Go vernment, the police and the army, the schools and the corporations, the farms and the economy. For the people of the Musami Mission and surrounding area, the hospital is one of the few things that they can rely on and we must ensure that they can remain to do so. Help us to revitalise this wonderful place that offers hope to a people living in a world of fear, disease and uncertainty.
