Land locked Zimbabwe is a country that has been wracked by problems for many years: plagued by famine, wars and the current economic and social turmoil; once considered the breadbasket of Africa, it is now one of the most impoverished countries in Africa. With a population of roughly 12.5 million (July 2003 estimate), over ¾ are below the poverty line and over 50% under the age of 16, the recent chaotic land reforms and consequent devastatingly low food production levels have compounded on the problems that already faced the people. HIV/AIDS is already at devastating levels with 33.7% of the adult population estimated to be infected , which after approximately 200,000 HIV/AIDS related deaths, has left 13% of the child population (or 780,00 children) orphaned. . |
