Runners Page
Updated by Alan Fernandes, January 2006

Dear Team,

Thank you for offering to run for Jesuit Missions.

On this page you will find details on entry procedure, training, the race and of course fundraising. If you have any ideas or events you would like to share with other members of the team, please e-mail them to me.

Race Entry: As many of you have heard, we have over 10 runners committed to running in the next marathon. Entries are open and you will be notified in early December by the London Marathon if you have been accepted. Jesuit Missions only has 25 guaranteed places available to cater for those who have been rejected. I would be grateful if you could contact me as soon as you know the outcome of your application so that I can start to allocate places. Please note that if I do not have enough places they will be allocated to those who have previously run for Jesuit Missions followed by those with the highest fundraising potential.

Fundraising: In December when we have confirmation of places I will send out sponsorship packs. A recent trend in fundraising is to use the Web for fundraising. As such you are most welcome to direct your sponsors to our website. We have also arranged a link with Just Giving to collect sponsorship online AND tax-efficiently. Their website also allows you to set up a webapge on their site so that sponsors worldwide can use their credit cards to sponsor you personally. Please click here to go to their site and follow the on screen instructions to set up your own page.

If you sponsors would like further details about our work, or if you would like us to thank them personally please e-mail me and I will ensure that any requests are carried out.

Training:
We have all heard various advice on how to train for a Marathon. From my own personal experience if you are not a regular runner I would suggest at least being capable of COMFORTABLY running 7 to 10 miles at your own pace by Christmas. The most vital pieces of information to remember are to warm up properly, and not over exert yourself as these both lead to injuries, which will seriously hinder your training. After Christmas there is no need to run more than 3 times a week. One long run each week (7-14 miles) together with 2 short runs of 2 to 3 miles will be sufficient. Resting properly between the long runs will give your body a chance to repair any minor injuries that you cannot feel at the time, before they become more serious.

I am arranging a series of training runs which will give us the chance to meet and hopefully motivate each other both in running and fundraising. They are as follows:

Location: Richmond Park, Roehampton Gate Car Park. Look out for a Jesuit Missions sign.

Please note that the Robin Hood Gate has now been closed permanently
and there is a
heavily enforced speed limit of 20mph in the park
.
You have been warned!

Time: 7.45 a.m. warming up, start running at 8.a.m. prompt
Direction: Anti-clockwise round the park. If late start running clockwise to join up. We will provide the drinks and any back up necessary
Breakfast: For those who are interested we can head into Wimbledon Village for a coffee and toast.

It is worth a visit, but if for any reason you are unable to attend, Send me your signed form together with a letter authorising me to collect your race number. I cannot collect your number without those two items!

Injuries/Illness: If for any reason you have an injury, or have a cold/flu within two weeks of the race DO NOT RUN. You must hand in your number to the Registration before race day. You will be guaranteed a place for the year 2008.

Accommodation: Anyone need ing accommodation on race weekend please get in touch as soon as possible so I can make arrangements.

T-shirts: We will provide them in February.

Race Day

There are 2 starting points for the race. You will be informed by the London Marathon during registration which start to use. From experience it is better to leave early and use any spare time to warm up rather than racing to the start.

Our departure and meeting points are as follows:

6.45am sharp at our office where we will have minibuses departing for Waterloo Station.

7.30am inside Waterloo at the bottom of the escalators going up to Waterloo East Station.

7.45am get the free trains from Waterloo East to the start.

Baggage: You will be given a kit bag that you can throw on the trucks at the start. They will be ready for you to collect at the finish.

Race Starts At 9.30 am , but you will probably not move for at least 3-5 minutes. Run at your usual pace, you will catch those speed ing away

Drinks: Water Mile Intervals (3miles – 25 miles), Sports Drinks 5 Mile Intervals. Be very careful you do not trip or slip on these bottles!

Emergency Numbers: My mobile 07949 078148, Office 0208 946 0466 or 0208 946 5316

Friends and Relatives: Our largest group of supporters will be on the Victoria Memorial outside Buckingham Palace. As you see the Palace swing to the left away from the flow of runners and the group will be there, together with a photographer. Look out for the blue and white balloons. There are 2 minibuses going to the meeting point from Jesuit Missions at 11am. Please call me if you would like your friends and relatives to travel on those minibuses.

After the race: Make your way back to the group outside Buckingham Palace who will have the minibuses and cars to bring you back to Wimbledon .

The Party

Finally we get to the party at our office in Wimbledon.Attending the party is a great finale to a truly memorable day. To allow us to cater sufficiently, please advise me if you and any of your guests will be attending.
