Wakupe!
is about much more than charity, more than fund-raising, it’s even more than running the marathon! It is about building bridges of friendship and cooperation across cultures. We aim to realise the painfully obvious: people need our help. But it is essential to offer the right kind of help, help that will ensure that they are the decision makers: the masters of their own destinies.

Wakupe! is a friendship.

For thousands of years, The Patamona and Macushi tribes have learned how to find all they need in life from the jungles and creeks around them where the borders of Guyana, Venezuela and Brazil meet. Now, their lands, their food, their cultures and their languages are being eroded by the tidal wave of globalisation that is sweeping through their, and our world. This has left them, and many others, scrambling to find a life that is worth living in this new, bizarre world.

Wakupe! aims to establish a regular link between the communities of the Pakaraimas and those in the rest of the World. A link that will inspire and equip them to find the future that they are looking for whilst maintaining and rekindling what is so beautiful about their world: so we can see their efforts the same way as they can see ours. The people need intelligent choices to be made for them, but more importantly BY them.

Celebrating diversity and friendships, restoring pride and self-confidence.

The main focus of our work will be on Cultural development, education, information, and income generation and propagation, with the decisions being made by the Patamona and Macushi and NO-ONE else. Taking place, simply put, through 3 phases:

Phase one:
Patamona Language rejuvenation, Computer Literacy, and Numeracy.

Phase two:
Ensuring that feasible, enlightening and effective decisions come from the people.

Phase Three:
Accompaniment. Our Friendship must be here and there for years.
