Democratic Republic of Congo

Democratic Republic of Congo

Our contact with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is through Fr Mpay Kemboly SJ. Fr Mpay was born in the DRC and is now studying for a Doctorate in Egyptology and Oriental Studies at Oxford. In the past two years he has been running in the London Marathon to supporteducational projects in Kimwenza.

education for the people is at the root of their rejuvenation. Fr Mpay Kemboly need s our help to build a new section of the Library in Kimwenza. This Library will be established for the benefit of those most in need and those who are calling out for it: the underpriviled ged men and especially women. The first focus will be on African Cultures and their relationship with the rest of the world. It is important that the people are able to understand their heritage and their importance in the context of our rapidly changing world. The second section will focus on literacy and numeracy development which will empower the people to find better jobs and self worth.

At the same centre in Kimwenza, in order to domesticate the violence that is so deeply ingrained in the people thanks to their sad history, Fr Mpay is looking to start up a proper Dojo for Martial Arts practise and discipline. This will bring the young people of the area together in a sociable way that will help focus their physical and spiritual energies in a way which will help them live in greater harmony.

Please help us get these two wonderful projects going so that the people can rebuild their lives making their future brighter than their past.

The History of this vast country in the heart of the African continent is fraught with abuse, extermination and tragedy. The country first became known to the West through the exploits of King Leopold II who systematically enslaved the tribal Congolese and exterminated an estimated 10 million innocent people in his quest for ivory and rubber. The country then fell into the hands of the Belgians who retained control of the country until their struggle for independence was granted in 1960. After a series of assassinated dictators, attacking troops and refugees from neighbouring countries ravaged the people and economy and today the Democratic Republic of Congo is struggling to get back on its feet with a newly elected President committed to rebuilding the country.

Available figures show that the HIV/AIDS pandemic is not as bad as in neighbouring countries but is still a major problem with 5% of adults infected. Poverty and crime are rife in the country as it strives to rebuild and rejuvenate the exhausted people.
